Academic Career

Dr. Orlando received a PhD in 1989 from the Department of Developmental and Cell Biology at the University of California, Irvine. He completed postdoctoral fellowships at The Scripps Research Institute (1991) and the University of California, San Diego (1995). He held a faculty position at the University of California, San Diego, before joining UNM in 2000.

Research Interests

Orlando’s research is focused on lipid metabolism in obesity, natural product drug development and obesity-dependent inflammation.

Patents: Therapeutic Curcumin Derivatives Patent No. 8,841,326, issued Sept. 23, 2014.

(Fitz List; Oct. 20, 2014) ─ The Erwin W. Lewis, MD, Awards are named in memory of Erwin W. Lewis, a 1977 School of Medicine graduate and much-admired faculty member who advocated for a diverse student body and worked to create a culturally competent curriculum. Each year the graduating medical students select from 1,021 full-time faculty members and 535 residents the clinical and basic science faculty members and resident who have contributed substantially to their educational experience.
