Undergraduate Program Description
Biochemistry is an undergraduate major in the UNM College of Arts & Sciences, making it the only undergraduate biochemistry program in the nation housed in a School of Medicine. It trains pre-med, pre-pharmacy and pre-dental students, as well as students enrolled in the Combined BA/MD Program.
Both BA and BS degrees are available. Students seeking to major in biochemistry must first be accepted into the College of Arts & Sciences. Once accepted, students of accredited programs can request to take the exam to get an ASBMB certified degree. For more information, contact the Undergraduate Program director.
The biochemistry bachelors degree meets or exceeds all of the curricular recommendations from both the American Chemical Society and the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The program is also consistent with current national recommendations for 21st century educational practices.
Although the biochemistry major is offered by the College of Arts & Sciences, the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is organizationally and physically part of the School of Medicine, located just across Lomas Boulevard from UNM’s main campus. Some courses are offered on the main campus, while more advanced courses and senior research are conducted in two modern, excellently equipped buildings in the medical school complex.
